Project Description
‘Xin Ming Yuen’ is an exquisite Chinese fusion cuisine of Cantonese, Sichuan and Beijing dishes made from fresh natural ingredients. Inspired by Hong Kong’s Multi-Culturalism, design concept is modern oriental aesthetics, a blend of Chinese and Western culture, as seen in the 1950’s and 1960’s Shanghai. With a skillful manoeuvre of colours, it connects Traditions with Modernity, Liveliness with Peace, East with West, Domestic with Exotic decorations. Traditional peacock green matched with brilliant yellow and modern metals are theme colours. Incorporation of Chinese auspicious patterns and vintage carvings in different materials build a strong relief effect and provide a lively visual journey of cultural relics.
User Value
Design style considers potential customers’ expectations for an experience of multiculturalism, history, art and creativity. The modern-retro style carries a playful and yet traditional style. Every customer observes interesting stimuli to their nerve of taste, smell, sight and art. It presents traditional culture as modern aesthetics which recalls memories of Shanghai as “Oriental Paris" in the 1950’s and 1960’s. To revive classical Chinese and Western design elements, there are use of modern building materials and textures to reconstruct classic architectural structures, use of science and technology to reform traditional art and patterns. Use of striking colour combinations is another vital element to build a novel genre of modern orientalism, a unique journey from past to present.
Business Performance
‘Xin Ming Yuen’ is situated in ‘Parkview Green’ - an innovative complex comprising commerce, culture, contemporary art and environmental protection. Designer refines brand image to carry a cosmopolitan style to appeal to potential customers of diverse backgrounds. Brand logo is an eye-catching red Chinese-charactered ‘新明園’ (Xin Ming Yuen) and is shown on shop front feature wall. Wall design concept is derived from the traditional Chinese brick house, yet wood material is chosen to construct a relief effect. An extra layer of stone-like surface varnish adds a solid brick texture. Between the feature wall and the main entrance door is a modern transparent glass and steel mesh screen. This application of various materials across the shop front brings a contrasting, multi-dimensional visual effect. It serves the function of standing out the shop and drawing in guests to the restaurant. Private rooms of different sizes are also designed to satisfy demands for private gatherings and commercial banquets
Team Structure
Project design was handled by the design team of Mas Studio Ltd under the leadership of its design director, Miss Monique Lee.
Flow
Much emphasize is put on design details and selection of materials. Through the use of modern technology, temporary building materials and contrasting textures, it adapts traditional design of East and West to a modern style. Traditional brick wall is now executed in wood. The wooden black lattice feature wall with matt black stone varnish retains a rough solid texture and is constructed for a relief visual effect. It forms a big contrast with the brilliant yellow polished door. The chessboard pattern ceiling at the reception area was originally designed to be in nostalgic oxidized glass mirror. In order to comply with the national building laws, it was made in treated steel plates instead. We have gone through a careful selection process of the right steel type and complex corrosion procedures before the best results are achieved. Ceiling design of the bar area incorporates the Chinese character‘ 回’auspicious pattern with the energy-saving LED light tubes. It integrates with the air-conditioning louver and pave a non-uniformed pattern to bring an even, soft, relaxing and mysterious lighting effect. Feature wall in the main dining room is originated from the Chinese herbalist ‘ Hundred Cabinets’. Adding trimmings and metal bars, it creates a strong contrasting visual effect. Windows are decorated with classical wooden venetian blinds to block glaring daylight, while antique stained glass screens with embossed begonia flowers tune in moderate lighting and a unique atmosphere.
Project Investment
It took roughly one year to complete the whole project which includes 2-3 months for design development followed by 9-10 months’ construction works before handover to client.
