Ching Chi Design pursues an expression of existentialism in space and develops designs based on the four themes of memory, light & shadow, mirror image, and theater. This design concept has been realized for the public facilities of a luxury congregate housing project in a high-end district in Taipei, Taiwan. This new small-scale project consists of only 11 units. The main design theme can be characterized as a small and individualized home-style public area featuring a fusion of exquisite local Taiwanese and international items and elements. The aura is expressed through adoption of oriental design techniques.

Every space features a constant succession of geometric squares and circles. The tranquil aura exudes ambition and a personality that significantly differs from an “uptight” sense of eternity in a constantly changing world. The flowing arrangement requires time and space. Against the backdrop of constantly mutating forms and shapes of the external world, these simplistic and seemingly boring elements bring out interesting details. The dignified and simple peripheral silhouettes draw the gaze of visitors to textures, color tones, and playful details hidden in these silhouettes. The whole space is composed of details which emerge and draw attention constantly and in quick succession. Architectural style and interior design is expressed through exquisite items and elements with the goal of providing residents with highly sophisticated housing objects at high-end prices.

In this limited public facility space, we ingeniously employ a finely segmented design concept. We utilize screens and corridors to influence the perception of spatial dimensions by viewers. Through lighting elements and a dividing door which is actually a movable wall, the constant exposure of the space and revolving luminous stone wall to the external lighting source is maintained at all times. These light arrangements and transformations give viewers a sense of extended spatial dimensions. These design elements mitigate the shortcomings of this project. The market value has been enhanced through the ingenious selection of cultural styles and exquisite items.

A conspicuous feature is the glass chandelier design which has been inspired by Hakka-style paper umbrellas. The hand-made elements are firmly secured with delicate steel rods. The four fine steel rods per “umbrella” are suspended from the ceiling. The illuminated chandelier therefore appears to be floating in mid-air. This element complements the Italian textile furniture and accessories famous for their oriental concepts. This fusion of local culture and world-famous exquisite items not only meets the market expectations of the proprietor but also creates a new cultural style for enterprises.

In view of the high sales price, the design unit served as the contractor for the whole interior design project to ensure meticulous and accurate execution. The goal was to ensure that utilized hardware and construction materials undergo a process of careful selection, plant visits, and sampling prior to highly accurate transportation to relevant sites for assembly comparable to the choice of fabric for exquisite furniture. For instance, identically looking stone plates attached to floors and walls actually come from completely different places of origin. After almost half of the material was discarded, a cohesive texture was crafted in a meticulous process. The constantly emerging details pose challenges which must be tackled one by one. For instance, the elevator buttons and elevator indicator lights are attached to the cabinet instead of the walls. Even the orientation marks for the buttons are carefully crafted solid metal squares. These tiny subtle details which resemble the delicate features of exquisite furniture represent a key characteristic of world-famous oriental craftsmanship.
