Project Description
In a highly homogenized bathroom product market, this project reconsiders the value of bathroom vanity design. Rather than serving solely as a functional container, the vanity is envisioned as a contemporary piece of furniture that carries cultural memory and shapes spatial emotion.
The “Ancient Nautical Chart” bathroom vanity is grounded in mid-20th-century Mid-Century aesthetics, drawing inspiration from the symbolic spirit of exploration, order, and time found in historic nautical maps. Instead of directly replicating maritime elements, the design translates the compositional logic and visual order of nautical charts into a furniture language, giving the product a perceptible sense of narrative.
Formally, the vanity adopts a framed structure, outlined by a black wooden border that echoes the boundaries and coordinate systems of nautical maps, directing visual focus toward the cabinet surface. Within the frame, zebra-grain engineered wood veneer serves as the primary visual expression. Its flowing grain resembles maritime routes and geographic markings, revealing a rational yet rhythmic layering through changing light and shadow, as if the surface were a preserved antique chart.
The material strategy adheres to principles of environmental responsibility and sustainability. The main structure combines solid wood with eco-friendly wood-based materials, paired with engineered veneer and black wood textures, allowing the design to return to the authentic beauty of material expression.
Functionally, the vanity balances display and storage through open shelving and a zoned drawer system. This arrangement enables daily use to be completed within a clear sense of order, while becoming an integral part of the overall spatial aesthetic.
