Project Description
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of HKSAR, Pauldesign made a giant leap forward in bringing historic Hong Kong landmarks to life through virtual reality, augmented reality and kinetic games, in both Hong Kong and Taiwan. The exhibition includes various creative interactive exhibits as well as images and models created using apps, advanced 3D stereoscopic scanning and printing technology. Through these displays, we are looking for a change in the educational landscape.
User Value
Old but not forgotten, we explore how historically and culturally important sites and buildings can be presented to public, using advanced digital means. Most importantly, our exhibit provides an insight into an out-of-classroom experience, where AR, VR transform textbook into a real-world scenario. Our Taiwan audience could also explore Hong Kong from a whole new perspective using the cutting-edge technology.
Social Impact
For the public, AMO exhibition allows them to understand the rich built heritage in Hong Kong and the earlier social landscape that these historic buildings reflect. Our apps provides 3D stereoscopic images and models which showcase building construction technology in early days and modern restoration techniques. The new attempt of VR and AR has required a completed rethinking of museum model. For teachers and students, we make it possible to incorporate VR into heritage teaching. This meaningful innovation should be promoted in traditional education. Students are able to better visualise and understand concepts at a much profound level, hence to strengthen analytical ability. Given a new way for fun learning, VR teaching exponentially speeds up the learning process with 3D immersion and micro-experience. In this highly innovative way of experiencing Hong Kong, our Taiwan visitors move beyond the “wow” factor to build cultural knowledge. “I’ve never thought of Hong Kong like that. This is not what I saw from books or magazine,” mentioned by one of the Taiwan audience. They navigate multiple perspectives on reality itself and reinvent a different Hong Kong impression.
Team Structure
Pauldesign combines graphic design capabilities with cutting edge technology to deliver unique historical content. Our engineers and multimedia designers work closely to create a new experience for not only students, but public to gain an exposure in AR and VR environment. We create apps and booklet to scan 3D stereoscopic image of Hong Kong well-known landmark.
Flow
In Hong Kong, our apps, “Heritage” is designated to enable visitors to scan the photos on the brochure, touch the 3D image of antiquities on a tablet, and take virtual tours in the four historical monuments. Meanwhile, visitors do not hesitate to check out video that screened at Ha Tsuen Jiao Festival, unfolding the excitement of traditional ritual events. Carrying forth a mission to celebrate and promote Hong Kong Week in Taipei, Pauldesign concentrates our efforts on presenting Touch Wall Motion 3D Historic Building Model, Virtual Reality Programme and on-site support and maintenance. The event fulfills the broader aim of affirming the importance of Hong Kong Heritage in the citywide—and nationwide—cultural scene. Replacing first-hand encounters, “Motion Wall” engages visitors interactively in a virtual tour of four stupendous historical monuments -  Tang Ancestral Hall, the Hong Kong Observatory, Tai Fu Tai and the former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower, by tapping the images projected on the wall for action, such as “Leave”, “Previous Page”, “Play”. Visitors feel just like moving around the real historic buildings and entering places never or rarely open to the public.  Among the innovative advantages of our VR display, we provide visitors an immediate effort-result satisfaction and autonomy of movement in the “Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality Zone”. Visitors are involved in multiple sensorial experiences where all their senses play a part in exploring the internal structure of relics, such as Yu Tai Study Hall and Tang Ancestral Hall. This enriches the visitor experience by melding the worlds of entertainment and education.
Project Achievements
Combining the past and present, Pauldesign elaborates on what Hong Kong looked like in its early days, enabling both Hong Kong Taiwan audiences to rediscover Hong Kong, through advanced three-dimensional scanned models and technological applications. We hope to provide an in-depth examination of the city’s built heritage and respond to future learning with AR and VR.
